Headmaster’s statement to Old Blues – 11 September 2017

Dear Old Blues,

I am sorry to have to write to you again about allegations of non-recent abuse. I hope you
will agree that it is important that the Christ’s Hospital community is kept as up to date as
possible on these matters.

Sussex Police have just issued the following statement:

“Peter Burr, 72, is due to appear at Crawley Magistrates Court on Wednesday 13
September, to answer a summons that between 1969 and 1972, while a teacher at
Christs Hospital School, Horsham, he committed 11 offences of indecent assault on
a boy aged between 11 and 14 who was then a pupil at the school.”

As I have previously indicated, the School continues to provide any support that is necessary to assist the police in their investigations. Since criminal justice proceedings are active, I am unable to provide further information. Please continue to bear in mind previous advice to refrain from any comment on social media in relation to these cases, as this could jeopardise the judicial process. If you believe you have information that may be useful, please contact Sussex Police on 01273 470101.

I would always encourage anyone who has been a victim of abuse to come forward.

A report can be made in a number of ways:

  • Our dedicated email address – safeguarding@christs-hospital.org.uk – is staffed by a small team of specialists who can respond to your concerns or pass them on to the relevant authorities. All approaches will be dealt with sympathetically and in complete confidence.
  • Sussex police can be reached on 01273 470101.
  • There are a number of organisations providing support for victims of child sexual abuse including NAPAC (the National Association of People Abused in Childhood) on 0808 801 0331 and the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.

If you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Simon Reid
Headmaster
